TecVision White: Gain Boost

April 12, 2023 - TecVision is our premium line of high-performance viewing surfaces with 11 different formulations. This allows you to take projection into more spaces than ever before.

But sometimes it's difficult to discern which ISF-certified TecVision surface is right for a specific application. This short series of blog posts will help you decide which best suits your project. Part 1, white reference screens, can be read here.

In part 2, we're looking at white viewing surfaces that provide gain boost to help with small projectors or other performance issues.

XT1300X White

Characteristics:

  • 1.3 gain, reference grade matte white
  • Excellent uniformity
  • Ultra smooth surface
  • Excellent off axis viewing
  • Provides a moderate increase in brightness
  • Lens/throw distance ratio for best brightness uniformity: 1.2:1 or longer

Applications:

  • Use in low light
  • Best when projector brightness is lower than desired
  • Screening rooms
  • Post-production
  • Dedicated film viewing

"When I turned the system on, I was blown away by this screen," Mike Wilson CTS-I, DMC-D 4K said. "What impressed me the most was the lack of 'hot-spotting' on the screen. I figured I would see some since I was projecting from such a close distance. I figured I would see issues with red/green/blue colors because of the high-gain material and only using a single chip DLP. [I] was also wowed by the off-angle viewing—I had been skeptical of the broad viewing cone."

XT1600X White

Characteristics:

  • 1.6 Gain
  • Excellent uniformity
  • Excellent off axis viewing
  • Provides a high brightness increase
  • Tolerates moderate ambient light
  • Lens/throw distance ratio for best brightness uniformity: 1.5:1 or longer

Applications:

  • Use in moderate light
  • Best when projector brightness is significantly limited
  • Classrooms
  • Home Theatre

XT1800X White

Characteristics:

  • 1.8 Gain
  • Excellent uniformity
  • Good off axis viewing
  • Maximum increase in brightness
  • Excellent uniformity
  • Lens/throw distance ratio for best brightness uniformity: 1.7:1 or longer

Applications:

  • Use in moderate ambient light
  • Best when projection brightness is limited
  • Active or color combining passive 3D

What Steve says:

"Even though these white surfaces provide extra brightness when the projector is too weak, they still are not ambient light rejecting surfaces. They should be used where ambient light is controlled. A great thing about these higher gain white surfaces is their wide viewing angles. Typically viewing angles are reduced as gain is increased, but our TecVision formulations have remarkably wide angles." -Steve Cook, AV Consultant Relations Manager.
