Maps are an excellent visual aide for storytelling. While it is easy to put labels on a map, sometimes, the maps really benefit from having regions filled in with colors to highlight something. With XPression Maps, Shape Styles are used to do just that. Your art department can create shape styles for various reasons, including political alignment or even just plain highlighting.
